Curriculum Vitae

Francesco Spina was born in Catania, Sicily, in 1963. From a very early age he started playing the guitar. At first he was self-taught but later, driven by a great desire and his love for music, he attended the “V. Bellini” Music Institute in Caltanissetta where, under the guidance of M° G. Torrisi, his natural ability was nurtured. Francesco Spina has attended numerous courses to improve and increase his musical skills; in Syracuse with M° A. Diaz, at the Rome Academy of Music with M° B. Battisti D’Amario, with M° Giulio Tampalini in Palermo, just to mention a few. Then he continued his studies with M° Nicola Oteri. He has also taken part in various music contests, always being classified among the winners. Apart from playing in several concerts, as a soloist or in duet accompanied by flute, violin or piano, Francesco Spina is also a recognized composer. His compositions have always been successful, both among the public and among critics. They have also been appreciated on the well-known guitar review “Seicorde”. In 2013 he was awarded the third prize in the “2nd Acerra (Naples) guitar composition competition” for the piece “Attrazione fatale”. In 2014 he was awarded the second prize and in 2015 the first prize in the Omegna (Vebania) composition competition “Azione musicale” and the first prize in the 15th Montecchio Maggiore (Vicenza) international competition “Arte Musicale e Talento”, in the section “composition for teaching”. He was in the International Composition Competition “Maurice Ravel” in 2015 and finished only a finalist for the Italian nation, in 2016 by getting a special mention. In the same year he took fourth prize for solo guitar section and fifth prize for the section chamber music with guitar at the III International Composition Competition of guitar “City of Favria”. At the moment he is a teacher in the musical course at “G. Galilei” Middle School in Acireale (CT).
